There’s so much more that goes into cleaning a pool than you might think. If you’re wondering whether professional pool maintenance is worth the cost, this article is for you.

First, we’re going to talk about the benefits of hiring a pool maintenance technician to keep your pool in prime condition with weekly cleanings. Then, we’re going to get one on one with Aquasphere’s head pool cleaner to see what water maintenance is like from a professional perspective.

Is a Pool Cleaning Service Worth It?

Having your pool cleaned on a regular basis is pivotal to maintaining a healthy backyard environment. Your pool isn’t just great summer fun–it’s also a beautiful water feature that ties your entire backyard together. Making sure it stays clean is key to keeping a gorgeous backyard you can be proud of. With a professional pool service, you get a consistent cleaning routine without even having to think about it.

Keeping it Balanced

Proper chemical balancing is key to maintaining your plaster, equipment longevity, and water quality over a long period of time. If you’re considering (or have recently received) a full remodel, chemical management is a top priority. Plaster cures much better, new surfacing lasts longer, and equipment stays running properly when your water chemistry stays properly balanced.

Without consistent quality chemical management, your equipment may erode or break much sooner than their intended lifespan. Some key pieces of pool equipment (such as large, expensive units like your pool heater) are especially sensitive to hard shifts in chemical imbalance, and may suffer as a result of too much or too less of one element.

A Specialized Pool Professional for All of Your Needs

Professional pool maintenance techs have the experience to spot issues with your equipment before it can become a larger (and more expensive) problem. They can recommend and perform proactive services, such as filter cleans, and connect you with their team to perform in-house repairs. Aquasphere prioritizes our pool route customers on our repair schedule to make sure they are taken care of with quality service as quickly as possible.

Perhaps most importantly, a professional pool maintenance technician is a personal expert in your corner in the case of an emergency. In extreme weather, such as Oklahoma’s famed hail, lightning strikes, and tornadoes, your pool technician can advise you on how to prepare and recover your pool. Small, family-run businesses like Aquasphere specialize in responding quickly to take care of your needs on a personal basis. We are relational, not transactional.

Interview with a Pool Cleaner

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a pool maintenance tech? Here’s a day in the life of our head pool cleaner here at Aquasphere, Graydon Chaples.

How Do You Service a Pool?

When I first get to a pool, I grab all of my equipment, including pools, brushes, and a trash bag. I go to the backyard and check the skimmer baskets, then empty out whatever has gathered there in the last week.

After the skimmer baskets are cleaned, I check if vacuuming is necessary based on how much dirt is at the bottom of the pool. If there are a lot of leaves, I don’t vacuum, because this will only clog the vacuum with wet organic material. Instead, I skim all debris out and empty my net into the trash bag to take with me.

After skimming and vacuuming, I brush the entire pool and spa. I then check the chemicals and adjust as necessary to maintain balanced water quality. Finally, I go to the equipment area to do final checks. This includes emptying the pump basket, making sure the chlorinators (such as tab feeders and salt chlorine generators) and filters are working properly, and checking for steady flow back to the pool.

Then I pack up all of my equipment, play with the pets (usually dogs and cats) and give them treats, shut the gate, and move on to the next pool to repeat the process.

How Long Does It Take to Service a Pool?

The service time depends on the pool. For the average sized pool, it takes about 20 to 30 minutes for a full clean. If the pool is larger, or has obstacles such as a lot of leafy trees or construction dirt around the water, it can take between 30 and 40 minutes. Smaller pools with minimal debris take around 15 minutes to fully clean (with two people on a route).

How Many Pools Do You Usually Service in a Day?

I clean eleven pools a day on average. Our pool maintenance routes here at Aquasphere usually include 2 people to quickly and effectively take these on, but we do have some solo crews.

What are the Best and Worst Things About Maintaining Pools?

The best thing about maintaining pools is getting to see all of the homeowner’s pets.

The worst thing is when the leaf season comes in the fall. Nothing will make you invest in a leaf net more than having to skim leaves in the fall.

What’s Your Favorite thing about Maintaining Pools?

The dogs, for sure. I keep treats on hand because they all deserve them! Side note–if you don’t want me to give your dogs treats, please tell me in advance.

I also love the satisfaction of cleaning a pool. I love working to get rid of all of the dirt and getting to see a crystal-clean final product when I’m done. I also get to drive all over the state, which I really enjoy.

What Do You Want the Average Customer to Know About Their Pool?

There’s a lot more that goes into cleaning a pool than people give it credit for. You can do it yourself with enough time and attention, but it is a delicate ecosystem that needs to be properly maintained. Without proper and consistent care, a pool can quickly get out of hand and become an unusable and unsanitary eyesore.

Some of my customers have been with us at Aquasphere for years. Because of that, I have been able to help them almost immediately with whatever equipment and weather emergencies arise, and prevented many smaller issues from getting out of hand. The importance of having intimate knowledge of each pool cannot be overstated.

Having the same people in your backyard week after week significantly helps both you and your pool service company understand your unique pool needs. Hiring a family business means having someone trustworthy and reliable in your backyard every week to take care of your pool like it's their own.
